Higher Rez Moon

For brief periods this evening the moon emerged from behind the clouds. I might be a couple of days late for the eclipse, but I still managed to get a nice shot of the moon. The transparency of the atmosphere was pretty good so the distortion on the moon wasn't too bad. I still had to do some work post to bring out the detail (you really want to shoot the moon when its lit from the side to bring out the craters). Maybe I'll see what it looks like as a 13x19 print.

Oil Platform

On Monday, we went on a whale watching tour near Santa Barbara. Sadly we didn't see any whales, only a few porpoises. This oil platform was about the only thing I was able to photograph.

As I write this there is a lunar eclipse occurring. Sadly, the skies are fairly overcast so I can't see it. We get 10 months a year of clear blue skies here and on the day of an eclipse its cloudy...

Sequoia National Park

Spent a couple of hours in Sequoia National Park today. On the way back to the hotel I saw this scene as the sun was setting and grabbed a quick snap.

Red-winged Black Bird & Great Egret

The Red-winged Black Bird is one of the most common birds in North America. The males can put on a show with its distinctive red shoulder. They also make a distinctive sound which makes them easy to spot and identify.

I photographed this guy at the Palo Alto Baylands on Saturday. I also photographed several shorebirds, a Great Egret and an Anna's Hummingbird. I have several pictures in my gallery.

I am very happy with the picture of the Egret, I've made a large 13x19 print and the detail is stunning.

One Ugly Color

As part of our bathroom renovation we decided to paint the bathroom and closets a coriander green. However once the paint was up it looked simply awful. So we just spend the last several hours fixing it (which involves a coat of primer and two coats of a different color). That'll teach us to experiment with funky colors.

The picture actually makes the color look decent, it was much, much worse in person.

Black-crowned Night Heron

This morning I went to the Baylands to see if there was any activity. Still no egrets, but I did spot this Black-crowned Night Heron. He was nice enough to hang out fairly close and then eventually flew up onto a branch. I managed to get several great shots of the Heron which I have posted in my Baylands Gallery.
