Moon with 7D

Whenever I get my hands on a new higher pixel density camera, photographing the moon has been I try. I received my 7D last week, but only yesterday did I have a chance to photograph the moon. Its a little too full for my taste, but still the detail is there.

These crops show that even with a 1.4x TC the lens is able to deliver enough resolution for the 7D's high pixel density sensor.

Technical Specs: Canon 7D, 800 f/5.6 IS + 1.4x TC, f/11, 1/200s, ISO 400.

Advanced Imaging Conference Day 1

Today was the first day of the 2009 Advanced Imaging Conference. Once again I am impressed with the conference, not only is it well run, but attendees are great; approachable and knowledgeable. This year I was speaking at the conference with my colleague Alan Erickson.

I had a chance to wander around the exhibition and ogle all the huge telescopes.

Ah if only I had a place in a dark sky location to put it.

I was momentarily considering building an observatory in my backyard, but our elevation is so low and the light pollution so high it hardly seems worthwhile.

I think this year I am going to give Lightbuckets a try.

Looking forward to all the talks tomorrow.

Morning in Point Pelee

On Sunday morning, I joined Michael Lam and his wife in a couple of short hikes around Point Pelee.

I'd heard of Point Pelee from a few bird photographers who had described the park as the place to be in the spring for Warblers. I didn't know, until Michael told me that its also a great place to see Monarch Butterflies in the fall.

Sadly we were about 2 weeks too late for the Monarchs but the walk was pleasant nonetheless.

I did manage to make a couple of decent images of a Ruby-Crowned Kinglet. Kinglets are notorious for being difficult to photograph due to their small size and constant movement.

Technical Specs: Canon 1Ds3, 100-400 (bird was with 1.4x TC).

More Fall Color

I went out to Victoria Park in Kitchener this morning since the light looked good. I managed to make a couple of images I am happy, though none I'm ecstatic about.

Technical Specs: Canon 1Ds3, 100-400.

Fall Color

Its been almost exactly 4 years since I left Waterloo and moved to San Jose. In that time I haven't visited Canada in the fall and forgot just how much color there is in the fall here.

I also forgot how cold it gets the fall. I went out looking for some color to photograph but didn't have much time. Sadly the light was pretty flat this morning as well. Hopefully the next couple of days bring nicer light.

Technical Specs: Canon 1Ds3, 100-400.

A Curlew, A Duck and a Red-winged Black Bird

No, this isn't the start of a bad joke :)

I haven't had a chance to do much shooting the past couple of weeks, between work and everyone being sick last week. I managed to get out to the Baylands before work this morning just to give the old 500 a little exercise.

I didn't see a lot of action, the tide was low and there's wasn't much activity. The fennel bush had its usual red-winged black birds.

Technical Specs: Canon 1Ds3, 500 f/4 + 1.4x TC.
