A couple of the other photographers here were kind enough to help me set up and carry my gear this morning so I went out with them to photograph Flickers. While waiting for one of the adult Flickers to return to the nest I saw this blue bird perched on a twig. As a bonus the background was clear of distractions too.

You Better Appreciate This Picture...

... because getting it cost me a high price. The picture itself is of a Loon with chick. I made this image very early this morning on Lac le Jeune. Upon returning to the dock, I had a mishap. I squished my right index finger between the boat and dock. The good news is that my finger is not broken. The bad news is that the nail was completely torn off .

I went to a nearby walk-in clinic and go to experience Canadian health care for the first time in about 5 years. The staff were very friendly, the service was very quick. I got a shot of Xylocaine to numb the finger. Everything was cleaned up and bandaged and now my hand/finger looks like this:

The pain isn't too bad, it only hurts when I move it :). I actually managed to go out afterwards and photograph a red-necked Grebe and a wood pecker (with some effort). Oh well, accidents happen. I'm told there's a good chance the nail will grow back though it will likely take 3-6 months.

Abstract Lily

I walked out to the front yard a couple of days ago at dusk and saw this lily. When I saw it, I knew exactly the kind of image I wanted to make and what you see above is it.

I am leaving for Kamloops tomorrow morning (at 6 AM no less). Since I am driving there, I won't arrive until sometime Sunday afternoon (after spending the night in Seattle). I will be at Lac le Jeune photographing Loons (among other avians) for 4 days before returning to Seattle to spend another 4 days with family. Fun times.

Technical Specs: Canon 1Ds3, 85L, f/1.2, 1/100s, ISO 1600.

Ring-necked Pheasant

Back in one April morning, I photographed this Ring-necked Pheasant at the Palo Alto Baylands. With preparing for the Galapagos trip and work since returning, I haven't had the chance to process this image until now.

I've seen pheasants at the Baylands in the past but they've been rather skittish. This one hung around for quite a while allowing itself to be photographed. The background was a little challenging at times though.

I was also able to get close enough to make a couple of tighter portraits.
