Redwoods - Sony A7r,  Leica 90mm Summicron, ~f/8, 0.5s, ISO 100
This is another image with some fairly difficult lighting that I was able to get away with only a minimum of post processing thanks to the VSCO Velvia preset.  I've also started trying out a different type of paper for my printing.  Yes I am one of those rare people these days that still prints images; I find viewing one's work on print to be much more satisfying than a computer screen.  The paper I'm using is the Canson Platine Fibre Rag.  So far I've mainly done color images with it and so far the results have been quite good.  The paper is fairly thick at 310 gsm and so has a nice feel to it.  I've printed a few images with subtle dark tones and so far they seem to be rendered faithfully with this paper on an Epson 4900.

Sossusvlei Dune

Sossuvlei Dune - Sony A7r, Leica 90mm f/2 Summicron, ~f/5.6, 1/2000s, ISO 400
I've messed with processing this image in Lightroom on and off for a couple of months but I could never the get colors to feel right for me.  This weekend, I re-started working with the VSCO presets for Lightroom and so decided to give it a try.  I got rid of everything I'd done to the image before, going back to a flat raw file and found that with just one click the Velvia 50- preset gave me almost exactly what I was looking for.  I didn't have to do much else other than crop and apply the "DR lows boost" tools preset.  In the end, it ended up being about 20 seconds in total of processing.

Grey-Headed Albatross

Grey-Headed Albatross - 5D3, 70-200 @ 200, f/4, 1/1600s, ISO 400
The Grey-Headed Albatross is a threatened species of Albatross nesting primarily on islands in the Southern Ocean.  Our very first landing on South Georgia Island was at Elsehul, where there is a colony of these birds nesting.  We hiked up a couple of hills and were positioned to photograph the nesting birds from a safe distance.  I particularly like the striking yellow color of the upper bill.

Majestic Kudu

Majestic Kudu - 1DX, 200-400 @ 560mm, f/5.6, 1/640s, ISO 1250
The Kudu with its twisted horns and thick fur on the top and bottom of the neck can be rather majestic looking in the right light.

Desert Obelisk

Desert Obelisk - Alpa STC, IQ 180, 32 HR, ~f/13, 1/8s, ISO 35
Shortly after making this image, I moved closer to the tree and experimented with a different composition that would bring even more emphasis to the patterns on the ground and the long root.

Hyena in Serengeti

Hyena in Serengeti - 1Ds3, 500 f/4 IS, f/5.6, 1/160s, ISO 800
There are people that seem to believe that Penguins are my primary photographic subject, so today I share a hyena image.  I made this image during the last light of the day on a game drive near the Belila Kempinsky lodge and completely forgot about it until I was going through my Lightroom library this weekend.  I have plenty of image of various other African wildlife, but not many of hyenas.  Hyena and perhaps wild dog might be subjects for a future trip.

Bamboo Forest

Bamboo Forest, Leica M240, 21 SEM, f/5.6, ISO 200
There aren't many (if any) Bamboo forests around here, so when I saw this one growing really tall in Hawaii last year, I found it very cool.

Davenport Pier and Bluffs

Davenport Pier and Bluffs - Alpa FPS, IQ 180, Canon 24 TS-E II, f/11, 4s, ISO 35
Spending the entirety of yesterday at the coast was great.  We weren't treated to any special light or weather conditions (the sunset was a total bust) but it was still great to get out.  In the evening, I went out to a spot I haven't been to yet, the bluffs overlooking what was Davenport Pier.  The conditions for good color were ok, until the bank of thick cloud at the horizon, then it was clear it would be a dud.  Still, I managed to capture a couple of frames with the plan of converting to black & white.

Redwoods Panoramic

Redwoods Panoramic - Alpa STC, IQ 180, SK 60 XL, ~f/13, 5s, 3 panel stitch
I'm taking the day off today to go shooting and the first spot will be Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.  The last time I was there (which is when I made this 120mp panoramic) was in February of this year where I "walked" the easiest trail with a knee scooter (still couldn't put weight on the leg).  I'm looking forward to seeing what other interesting "woodsy" subjects I can find in the park.  I know that the Santa Cruz area is where we'll head to for sunset (maybe the Davenport Pier), but any suggestions for the middle of the day?  I'm thinking of finding places where I can do black & white long exposures during the harshest light.

Clouds in Yosemite Valley

Clouds in Yosemite Valley - Alpa STC, IQ 180, ISO 35
Tunnel view in Yosemite can make for interesting images even in the morning when the clouds settle into the valley.

Fluid Motion

Fluid Motion - 5D3, 400 2.8 IS II, f/5, 1/4000s, ISO 400
Penguins are very graceful underwater, but not as much when coming out of the water and onto land.  However, with the right timing and fast shutter speed, it almost looks like they are dancing.
