More Signs of Spring

Flowering Cactii over Garrapatta Beach - 5D3, 17 TS-E, f/13, 1/80s, ISO 100
I was supposed to go shooting at the coast yesterday morning but we got rained out.  Too bad it wasn't scheduled for today as its a beautiful morning for photography.  This image was taken almost exactly a year ago at one of my favorite places for coastal photography Garrapatta State Beach.

Lupine and Ravine Falls

Lupine and Ravine Falls - Leica S2, 30mm Elmarit-S, f/22, 6s, ISO 160
My physio-therapist asked me yesterday if I had any concrete goals related to my recovery and ability to walk.  I didn't really have to think about it, the thing that came to mind right away was being able to hike again so that I could make images like this.  I stated my goal more specifically and said I would like to be able to do the skyline to the sea trail (though starting from Big Basin as to do it in one day), though really I would just love to be able to return to the Table Mountain area (where this image was made) and hike / walk around for a few hours making images.  I know I'll get here, just have to keep at it.

Flowering Mustard, Hurricane Point

Flowering Mustard - Alpa STC, IQ 180, 32 HR, ~f/16, 150s, ISO 100
Around this time of year the California coast starts flowering and one particular spot I really like is a place called Hurricane Point.  Its a pretty windy place in the early morning and I've always wanted to make an image with the blur of the flowering mustard moving in the wind.  I've photographed this place a few times but never really came away with an image I liked with the mustard.  I'm not entirely happy with this one either, the sky in the background is somewhat dull and the image still feels like its missing something.

Surf and Sunset

Surf and Sunset - Alpa STC, IQ 180, 32 HR, ~f/11, 2s, ISO 35
I made this image almost a year ago on a shoot at Davenport beach with friends, but it wasn't until this weekend that I had the urge to process it and bring out what I had in mind when I made the capture.  I think the tide was slowly coming in that evening and so the waves would slowly get higher and higher.  I loved the contrast of the white of the surf against the warmly lit black and so I timed my 2s exposure for maximum waves.  We are starting to head into what is a good time for Big Sur coast photography, the spring.  Though I can walk somewhat, a beach is probably something I won't be visiting for a little while longer and slippery rocks with steep hikes not for many months.

Penguin Posse - 5D3,  400 f/2.8 IS II, 400mm, f/4.0, 1/400s, ISO 100
Don't these Penguins look like their about to lay down the law, looking around for trouble makers?

Yep, Pretty Much

Road Closed - Leica M (Type 240), 21 SEM, ~f/3.4, ISO 200
Driving along the Chain of Craters road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a blast because of the almost surreal landscape.  The road ends where a previous lava flow wiped it out.  There's a little parking area and one can then hike onto the lava rock where after a few hundred yards you'll encounter this sign.

Out of the Water

Out of the Water - 5D3, 400 f/2.8 IS II, 400mm, f/4, 1/2000s, ISO 400
Penguins are graceful swimmers with great speed and agility under water.  On land, they aren't the fastest walkers but they do manage to waddle around.  However, that transition from swimming to standing is where they are the funniest.  They flap around throwing dirt and water in all directions as they go from laying on their belly to standing up.  I watched King Penguins do this over and over again and it just doesn't get old.

Seabirds over the Southern Ocean

Seabirds over the Southern Ocean - 5D3, 24-70 II @ 24mm, f/10, 1/1000s, ISO 800
It takes just a little over two full days to get to South Georgia Island from the Falkland Islands.  Even during this crossing, there are things to photograph, particularly various sea birds which can circle and follow the ship for miles.
