Basin Falls

Basin Falls - Leica S, 24mm, f/8, 6s, ISO 100.

Basin Falls at nearby Uvas Canyon park from last week.  Unfortunately there aren’t any more rains in the forecast for the next week, was hoping to see these falls flow even more before the new year.

Merry Christmas from the California Coast

Sea Stacks on the California Coast - A7rII, Batis 85mm, f/8, 6s, ISO 100.

Merry Christmas from the California Coast!  The whole lot of us down to the coast this afternoon hiking around some of my favorite places in the area in what turned out to be a beautiful day.  Can’t think of a better way to spend the day.

Alcatraz and Golden Gate

Alcatraz and Golden Gate - Leica Q, 28mm, f/5.6, 1/1000s, ISO 100.

I’ve lived in the bay area for over 10 years and there’s still many tourist spots I haven’t visited, Alcatraz among them.  At least for Alcatraz, that was addressed yesterday with a visit to the infamous former prison turned national park.

Sunset after Storm

Sunset after Storm - Leica S Type 007, 30-90 @ 90mm, f/11, 1/4s, ISO 100.

Another one from yesterday evening, this one taken only 3 minutes prior to the other image.  It was incredible how fast the light color was changing and the light level dropping.

Sunset after Storm

Sunset after Storm - Leica S Type 007, 30-90 @ 39mm, f/11, 0.5s, ISO 100.

I made this image at the side of the road only a couple of miles from my house.  I’ve driven past this spot many times and each time I’ve thought to myself that in winter with the green hills, dotted trees and a  great sunset it could make for an interesting image.  Yesterday in the late afternoon, I went out for a short hike with my daughter at a nearby county park as the rain had just stopped earlier in the afternoon.  The sky was overcast at the park, but on our way home, right at the spot I’d always wanted to photograph the sky exploded in color.  The conditions weren’t totally ideal, as the hills are still very brown with only patches of fresh green grass.  Still, some beautiful color.

Sligachen Waterfall

Sligachen Waterfall - Alpa STC, 32 HR, ~f/13, 9s, ISO 35.

The recent rainy, cloudy weather we’ve been having here in the bay area (which is much needed) reminds me of the trip to Skye from earlier this year.  The skies here are just totally overcast and not as moody or dramatic as those in Skye.

Southern Giant Petrel

Southern Giant Petrel - 5D3, 400mm, f/2.8, 1/3200s, ISO 500.

I made this image on the first day at sea, having departing the Falkland islands on the way to South Georgia on my 2012 trip.  I went with Cheeseman’s Ecology Safaris and that proved to be incredible productive photographically.  It seems that Cheeseman’s is doing their last ever South Georgia trip next fall.  If South Georgia Island is on your wist list of places to photograph, I high recommend getting on that expedition.

Shapes in the Fog

Shapes in the Fog - 645Z, 28-45 @ 45mm, f/14, 1.6s, ISO 100.

There’s some pretty intense fog that rolls quickly in the very northern California / southern Oregon coast.  About 15 minutes before I made this image it had been clear in that direction with everything perfectly visible.

Keyhole

Keyhole - 5D2, 24 TS-E, f/10, 1/80, ISO 100.
We are fast approaching the ideal time of year to photograph the keyhole arch at Pfeiffer Beach.  On the day when the sun angle is perfect, you can expect several dozen photographers all lined up trying to get the shot.

Skua on the Lookout

Skua on the Lookout - 5D3, 24-70 @ 38mm, f/9, 1/250s, ISO 100.

I find Skuas to be hard birds to like.  They generally get their food by stealing it from other seabirds and in Antarctica they go after Penguin chicks.  To top it off they are also aggressive.  I guess they are the thieving jerks of the animal kingdom.

Nesting in the Rain

Nesting in the Rain - 5D3, 70-200 @ 200mm, f/4, 1/100s, ISO 800.

This Gentoo Penguin stays on the nest despite the driving rain and freezing cold.

Dust Storm

Dust Storm - RX100, f/5, 1/1600s, ISO 125.
On that excursion to the Andes, we encountered a pretty crazy dust storm right after we finished lunch.

Blue & Aqua

Blue & Aqua - 5D3, 24-70 @ 24mm, f/6.3, 1/400s, ISO 100.

When I visited Santiago in 2012 (a two day stop on the way to the Falklands and South Georgia Island), I went on a day trip into the Chilean Andes.  The high elevation made for deep blue skies and clear, aqua water.

Layers of Color

Layers of Color - D810, 70-200 @ 70mm, f/8, 1/200s, ISO 100.
Later this morning, I’m headed to Santiago Chile for ICCV (computer vision conference).  I’ve been to Santiago a couple of times before but an open to any suggestions of things I should check out in the evening.

i made this image on my trip to Chile earlier this year, this was in Punta Arenas.

Marabou Stork Take-off

Marabou Stork Take-off - 1DX, 200-400 @ 400mm, f/5.6, 1/4000s, ISO 800.

The Marabou Stork is a very large wading bird mainly in sub-saharan Africa.  Similar to vultures, they are scavengers, eating almost anything they can swallow.  Also similar to vultures they have a face only a mother could love :)

Saddle-billed Stork

Saddle-billed Stork - 1DX, 200-400 + 1.4x @ 540mm, f/8, 1/1250s, ISO 3200.

The Saddle-billed Stork is striking for obvious reasons, the colorful bill.  Interestingly the male and female have the same plumage and bill color but you can tell the them apart by the color of the eyes.  This is a female since the eyes are yellow.

Take Off

Take Off - 1DX, 200-400 + 1.4x @ 533mm, f/5.6, 1/1000s, ISO 400.

A Yellow-billed Kite takes off from its perch.  In addition to all the wonderful mammals to photograph in the Okavango Delta, there’s also a rich set of Avian subjects.  Also if I have misidentified this one, please feel free to correct here.

Look to the Light - 1DX, 200-400 + 1.4x @ 560mm, f/5.6, 1/500s, ISO 1000.
Yesterday, December 4th was International Cheetah Day.  I’m a day late with my photo but better late than never for these magnificent creatures.

Abhainn Sgaladail

Abhainn Sgaladail - Leica S, 30-90 @ 30mm, f/11, 1s, ISO 100.

Clouds over snow dusted mountains from which Abhainn Sgaladail, a river on the Isle of Harris flows.  Though this was a quick stop for us on our way to catch our ferry at Stornoway I remember the scene well and would love to photograph it again.

Clearing Storm over Laxdale Lochs

Clearing Storm over Laxdale Lochs - Leica S, 30-90 @ 54mm, f/8, 1/125s, ISO 100.

Laxdale Lochs is a series of lochs (i.e. lakes) in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland.  We ended up not having a morning shoot that day because of heavy rain but by mid morning it started to clear with even a bit of a rainbow.
