Antarctic Storm - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 75-150 @ 75mm, f/8, 1/250s, ISO 50.

Gotta love the weather in the Southern Ocean, its storming one minute, beautiful the next and all with exquisite, dramatic light.

Shrouded in Cloud

Shrouded in Cloud - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 240mm, f/10, 1/500s, ISO 50.
I haven’t posted many images from Antarctica mainly because I’ve been through them trying to figure out what appeals to me and what I want to do with them.  I’ve also compared them to my images from my 2012 trip to South Georgia Island and I realized that my photographic style and eye has changed somewhat.

The images that appeal to me from this trip can be classified into two categories: “light” minimalist landscapes like this one and grand ice-scapes with small interesting detail (usually wildlife).  The images from my 2012 trip that appealed to me were landscapes with Penguins in them.  As I’m going through my images, especially those grand ones with small interesting detail, I’m realizing that sharing them online via tiny screens is unsatisfying, I’ll need to make some big prints.  Co-incidentally, I received my Daydream VR headset this week and it turns out its a great way to experience these kinds of images.  Can’t wait for even higher resolution, higher gamut VR!

I made this image on an epic day in Antarctica.  Following an incredible landing on the continent at Portal Point, we cruised down Charlotte Bay filled with icebergs, clouds and dramatic light.  I made more images that day than any other for the Antarctic portion of the trip (the only other day I made more images was at St. Andrew’s Bay on the South Georgia Island portion of the trip).

A Beach, A Storm and A Rainbow

A Beach, A Storm and A Rainbow - Alpa STC, Phase One IQ 180, Rodenstock 32mm, ~f/11, 1/30s, ISO 35.

I remember that afternoon on a beach at Luskentyre well.  We walked over some dunes down to the beach and I was struck by the wildly colored, striated rocks.  I started making some images with them and then the storm in the distance picked up and looked like it was heading over.  Just as I decided to pack up, a beautiful complete rainbow appeared over the composition I had been working on.  Most of my images that day were in black & white but a rainbow deserves color.

Curious Penguins

Curious Penguins - 5D3, 70-200 @ 70mm, f/6.3, 1/125s, ISO 100.

I’m continuing my journey to Ushuaia today, stopping off at Buenos Aires.  While my last trip was Penguin filled, I’m hoping and expecting that I’ll get to see and photograph a lot more icebergs this trip.  While South Georgia Island might be unmatched for wildlife, looking forward to that Antarctic Ice.

Penguin Posse

Penguin Posse - 5D3, 400mm, f/4, 1/1000s, ISO 200.
In a couple of days I’ll be returning to one of my favorite places on the planet, South Georgia Island.  I had attempted to visit Antarctica in January 2015, but never made it there due to weather (it was a flying trip that involved landing at a Chilean base which was covered in dense fog).  So, now I’ll be sailing out of Ushuaia in a couple of days reaching both South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Since I’ll have no internet during the 3 week voyage, I’ve got a couple of images from my 2012 trip to South Georgia and the Falklands to share the next few days until I get on the ship.  Today, its off to the airport to start the several flights to the very tip of South America, Ushuaia, Argentina.
