Obelisk

Obelisk - D810, 15mm, f/22, 1/100s, ISO 64.

This natural “Obelisk” doesn’t really fit that definition (its neither point enough at the top nor square enough in its cross section), but its my photo and I’ll caption it the way I want :)

Pointy Succulent

Pointy Succulent - Leica S 006, 30-90 @ 66mm, f/16, 1/125s, ISO 400.

This is one of the funkiest trees I’ve ever seen, also at Fuerte Bulnes in Patagonia.

Dunes of the Namib Rand

Dunes of the Namib Rand - Alpa STC, IQ 180, 32 HR, ~f/13, 6s, ISO 35.

Bushes shake in the wind, the same wind that each night sweeps these dunes clean.

Stained Rocks

Stained Rocks - Leica S 006, 30-90 @ 30mm, f/16, 1/125s, ISO 200.

The lichens growing on the rocks make it look like they were colorfully stained.  I made this image at Fuerte Bulnes in Patagonia.

Takakkaw Falls

Takakkaw Falls - D800e, 15mm, f/10, 6s, ISO 100.

Stormy Backdrop

Stormy Backdrop - 1Ds3, 70-200 @ 85mm, f/6.3, 1/320s, ISO 400.

Dark thunderclouds cover one part of the sky completely but because the sun still peeks out from behind, its the perfect lighting to frame these trees.

Glorious Sunrise

Glorious Sunrise - 5D2, 24-105 @ 24mm, f/8, 1/200s, ISO 400.

Seeing this would pretty much always be a great start to a day.

Gold and Blue

Gold and Blue - 645Z, 80-160 @ 108mm, f/10, 10s, ISO 100.

Golden sunset goes really nicely with Pacific blue.

Folded Spathe

Folded Spathe - 5Dsr, 100mm, f/2.8, 1/1000s, ISO 100.

The spathe is the white leaf-life curved structure that wraps the spadix (the yellow spike in the middle).  Typically the spate wraps around smoothly but in this specific it folds under itself in a few places.

Flowing Merced

Flowing Merced - A7rII, 70-200 @ 90mm, f/8, 10s, ISO 100.

The same scene as yesterday but from a slightly different angle.  Even if the Redbud isn’t flowering, with some crafty black & white processing some of the other trees can pop.

Banks of the Merced

Banks of the Merced - A7rII, 24-70 @ 48mm, f/13, 8s, ISO 100.

If I had timed my visit a little later those Redbud on the banks of the Merced would be in bloom.  In the park, in some places the Dogwood have started blooming but I didn’t find any near the water.

River Rocks

River Rocks - A7rII, 16-35 @ 16mm, f/13, 8s, ISO 100.

Large rocks on the banks of the Merced river always make for an interesting subject.

River and Tree

River and Tree - A7rII, 24-70 @ 52mm, f/8, 15s, ISO 100.

I spent the weekend at Yosemite and for the first time ever I don’t think I took a single picture of anything touristic or iconic.  The time was spent just relaxing with family (no sunrise or sunset photography) and though I did make a few photographs they were all mostly near the hotel which is technically outside the park.  I made this one, from our patio, the Yosemite View Lodge has many rooms with a gigantic patio on the banks of the Merced river, well worth it.

Tiny Waterfall

Tiny Waterfall - Leica S 007, 30-90 @ 46mm, f/9.5, 6s, ISO 400.

A tiny waterfall among towering trees.

Waves, rocks and Dudleya at Soberness Point.

Lone Tree

Lone Tree - 5Dsr, 100-400 @ 321mm, f/7.1, 1/250s, ISO 100.

A classic lone tree atop a hill during a storm.

Layers of Color

Layers of Color - 5Dsr, 100-400 @ 220mm, f/7.1, 1/125s, ISO 100.

Another variant on the theme of layers, this time with layers of color.  I saw a spot down the road with yellow grasses that had grown high and wanted to use them to add another layer of color to the scene.

Two Trees

Two Trees - 5Dsr, 100-400 @ 248mm, f/7.1, 1/200s, ISO 160.

I was trying to find compositions with layered elements this weekend.  It rained on and off the entire time we were out with clouds rolling over the larger hills in the distance.

Green Hills

Green Hills - Leica S 007, 30-90 @ 90mm, f/8, 1/250s, ISO 100.

We had a mini storm in the bay area this weekend which has resulted in all the hills becoming a vibrant green.  On Sunday I went for a drive with the kids on some of the backroads near my hour looking for a nice group of hills with trees.  This location was probably the best I found and is only about a mile from my house.

Any Other Name

Any Other Name - Leica S 007, 120mm, f/8, 1/180s, ISO 200.

This rose was also the first to bloom this weekend, we are heading quickly into summer in California!

Siberian Iris

Siberian Iris - Leica S 007, 120mm, f/8, 1/30s, ISO 100, 20 image focus stack.

This Siberian Iris was the first to flower in the front yard this weekend, perhaps because of the rain we’ve gotten the last two days.  I took the opportunity to some “serious” macro photography by stacking 28 images to create this final composite.

Sea Arch

Sea Arch - Leica S2, 30mm, f/13, 1/5s, ISO 160.

This arch is one of my favorite spots on the Big Sur coast and this is the ideal time to head there for photography.  The hills should be green and at least some wildflowers should be blooming.

Three Against One

Three Against One - D810, 80-400 @ 80mm, f/8, 1/320s, ISO 200.

Makes me wonder what the one Penguin did to get kicked out of the nest by the other three.

Seeking Attention

Seeking Attention - D810, 80-400 @ 400mm, f/8, 1/320s, ISO 200.

Two Magellanic Penguin chicks look for attention from their parents, also a trait not exclusive to human kids I guess.

Conga Line

Conga Line - 645Z, 150mm, f/2.8, 1/250s, ISO 3200.

Its a Mountain Gorilla Conga Line!

Playing with Dad

Playing with Dad - 1DX, 70-200 @ 80mm, f/8, 1/250s, ISO 200.

There aren’t too many examples of great dads in the animal kingdom but watching this Silverback lay back patiently as the little ones climbed all over playfully was special.

Secrets - 1DX, 70-200 @ 200mm, f/2.8, 1/320s, ISO 2000.

Psst.  I have a secret to tell you.

Sneaking a Snack

Sneaking a Snack - 1DX, 70-200 @ 200mm, f/2.8, 1/250s, ISO 6400.

This little guy looks like he’s sneaking a snack of fresh Bamboo.

Wide Eyed Baby

Wide Eyed Baby - 1DX, 70-200 @ 168mm, f/2.8, 1/250s, ISO 800.

Its not just human babies that like to suck on their thumbs.

Hangin' Out

Hangin’ Out - 1DX, 70-200 @ 200mm, f/2.8, 1/160s, ISO 320.

A juvenile Chimpanzee pauses for only the briefest moment, otherwise busy climbing and playing.
