Creyke Point Sunrise

Creyke Point Sunrise - Phase One IQ3 100mp, 23mm, f/11, 30s, ISO 50.

I managed to get out a few times during the last week and make some photos, though these days I don’t like downloading or looking at them until after I get back.  So this morning I started working on them and so far this one is probably my favorite.  I photographed this scene a couple of different ways and while I don’t naturally gravitate to ultra wide angle lenses, it works for me here, especially with the trail in the foreground.

Boat and Lighthouse

Boat and Lighthouse
I didn't feel like lugging a gigantic camera and tripod while on a family visit to Fisgard Lighthouse, but I still like practicing seeing and making photos, sometimes with my Pixel phone and others with a small camera like the RX100.  I liked the triangle of three elements in this image with the boat, lighthouse and boat house and while its backlit, it still works for me.  When working with the smaller cameras, I stick to a JPG workflow using either the editor in Google Photos or Snapseed.  I needed Snapseed for this photo as its powerful local editing tools were essential.

Curves - Leica S007, 30-90 @ 44mm, f/19, 1/12s, ISO 100.

I love the sweeping line and the soft delicate early morning light in this image.

Courting Penguins

Courting Penguins - 5D3, 400mm, f/4, 1/1250s, ISO 400.

Seems like a good day to share this particular image of courting King Penguins.  I guess they went behind that rock for some privacy…

Sunrise - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 75mm, f/11, 1/800s, ISO 400.

I normally do everything I can to avoid flare in my images but in this case I like how the flare forms a frame at the bottom of the photo.

I am not an urban decay photography by any stretch (though I make an exception for the sand covered ghost town of Kolmanskop in Namibia).  I was familiar with all the rust photography opportunities at Grytviken on South Georgia Island but Deception Island was new for me.  I made these two images on our final landing of the trip at Deception Island shooting through open windows.  I know depth of field would be a challenge so I captured a focus stack (which is ridiculously easy with the Phase One XF).  While working on the images I found all the little details from the layers of colors in the peeling paint to the various little wires and bits of metal fascinating in these images.

Kings on the Beach

Kings on the Beach - Leica S007, 30mm, f/11, 1/125s, ISO 100.

One of my favorite images I made on my 2012 trip to South Georgia was when I laid on the ground and had a group of King Penguins walk right by me.  I was amazed by how fearless they were.  A similar thing happened my on my trip last year, this time at the beach at our landing site.  We were surrounded by a group of King Penguins entering and returning from the water and just hanging around.

I haven’t had time to look at or work on any images the last few weeks, so I forced myself to dig out and post a few photos from Arches National Park.
