Steam and Storm Clouds

Aravind Krishnaswamy: Shoe Box &emdash; Steam and Storm Clouds
Steam and Storm Clouds - Phase One XF, 150mm, f/7.1, 1/200s, ISO 400.
It was a challenging day for photography as it rained kept raining on and off.  However, this morning, for a few moments we had a small break in the rain at an area with thermal vents and some interesting dark storm clouds in the distance.

Aravind Krishnaswamy: Shoe Box &emdash; Aldeyjarfoss
Aldeyjarfoss - Phase One XF, 40mm, f/11, 2.5s, ISO 50.
One last photo from today before I go to bed, this time all of Aldeyjarfoss in all its glory and in color.  The Phase system is expensive, heavy and a pain to carry around but each time I pull up the files on my computer they bring a smile to my face.  Definitely the case here, it was a challenge making images in the wind and rain but once I pulled up this image in Capture One and saw the color and detail, it felt worth it.

Maelstrom - Phase One XF, 65mm, f/12, 2s, ISO 100.
A powerful waterfall surrounded by beautiful Basalt columns, Aldeyjarfoss did not disappoint and is one of the most unique waterfalls I’ve photographed.  I made many images there this afternoon where we had nice overcast light for this kind of photography.

Painted Landscape

Painted Landscape - Phase One XF, 150mm, f/14, 1/13s, ISO 50.
I saw some aerial landscapes of Iceland made by Hans Strand last year and remember thinking to myself that they looked like surreal paintings.  I got to experience them last night as the sun set and the cornucopia of interesting colors and textures came out.  In every direction there was an interesting image to be made and this was one of the first.

Highland Sunrise

Aravind Krishnaswamy: Shoe Box &emdash; Highland Sunrise
Highland Sunrise - Phase One XF, 60mm, f/6.3, 1/125s, ISO 200.
We got up at 2:30 AM to try and catch some sunrise color (the sun rises at 4 AM).  Unfortunately it was too windy and rainy for sunrise, but on our way out at around 5:30 it cleared up for just a moment to quickly make some images.  I had to work fast, hand holding the beast that is the XF to make images before the wind and rain came back in a fury.  The light was also a challenge as it was very bright in the small area where the sun came through.

First Iceland Waterfall

First waterfall photo in Iceland.  It was crazy windy so it was quite a challenge making images.  Hopefully the wind dies down in the coming days for some long exposure work.

Icicles on Ice

Aravind Krishnaswamy: Shoe Box &emdash;
Icicles on Ice - Leica SL, 106mm, f/8, 1/1250s, ISO 250.
I'll be heading to Iceland soon and have been working on some ice images from Antarctica.  I don't expect to see a ton of ice there, since its the summer, but am looking forward to the Glacier Lagoon.

Cloud Mountain

Cloud Mountain - Leica SL, 139mm, f/7.1, 1/1250s, ISO 250.
The layers of dark and light make it seem like there is another mountain behind the lenticular cloud.

Framed Mountain Top

Aravind Krishnaswamy: Antarctica &emdash; Framed Mountain Top
Framed Mountain Top - Leica SL, 90mm, f/6.3, 1/4000s, ISO 100.
Sometimes nature practically makes the photo for you.  In this case, it was clouds that perfectly framed the top of this mountain near Charlotte Bay, Antarctica.

Bass Harbor Head Light

Bass Harbor Head - Alpa TC, IQ3 100, 35mm, f/11, 1/13s, ISO 100.
I really wanted to photograph Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse with the vibrant yellows and reds of the late afternoon/early evening light.  However when we got out there a dense fog had rolled in and was only getting more dense.  All the interesting color got sucked out of the scene, but the fog does give an interesting sense of atmosphere in black & white.

Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor - Alpa TC, IQ3 100, 35mm, f/11, 6s, ISO 100.

After the sun fully set that evening, the western sky lit up really nicely with a ton of color.  Again, I had to move fast to figure out a composition that would work.  I knew I wanted the ships and the dock, but needed something in the foreground to anchor the scene.

Balance Rock

Balance Rock - Alpa TC, IQ3 100, 70mm, f/11, 10s, ISO 100.

I was in a bit of a rush the evening I made this image as the light was fading quickly and walking along “The Shore Path” I wasn’t seeing a lot of interesting compositions.  Finally when I saw Balance Rock with the little rock piles on top I knew I could make something of it.
