Under the Ice

Under the Ice - Alpa TC, IQ3 100, 23mm, f/11, 15s, ISO 50.

It look some effort to set up my camera at the right angle to make this image as the ceiling in this part of of the ice cave was very low, it also didn’t help that this part of the cave was very dark.  Still, I had a suspicion when I saw the scene that a very wide angle lens placed really low and pointed up towards the top of the cave would make for an interesting image.

Ice Beach Sunset

Ice Beach Sunset - Alpa TC, IQ3 100, 35mm, f/22, 2s, ISO 50.

The Ice Beach was a bit of a disappointment on my winter trip because there wasn’t a lot of ice on the beach, but with a bit of sunset color, there’s still a nice image.

Stream to the Ocean

Stream to the Ocean - Alpa TC, IQ3 100, 70mm, f/16, 120s, ISO 50.
When I was capturing this image, I planned on it being a black & white, but when working with it, I really liked the soft pastel color palette.

Waves of Sand and Snow

Waves of Snow and Sand - Alpa TC, IQ3 100, 35mm, f/22, 4s, ISO 50.

Waves made of black sand and snow with the last light of the day highlighting the peaks of Vestrahorn.

Furballs - 5D3, 400mm, f/5, 1/200s, ISO 200.

Little furballs with attitude.

Contemplation - Pentax 645Z, 150mm, f/2.8, 1/250s, ISO 1600.
Another image of a skyward looking Mountain Gorilla.

Looking Skyward

Looking Skyward - Pentax 645Z, 150mm, f/2.8, 1/250s, ISO 1600.
One of the things I found striking about seeing Apes in the wild is their propensity to look up.  This could be explained by them looking to the canopies of the trees scanning for activity but I think it gives them a look of majestic curiosity.

Roots and Rocks

Roots and Rocks - Phase One XF, IQ3 100mp, 40mm, f/14, 1/25s, ISO 50.

I made this image on my second day photographing at the Bruce Peninsula earlier this year.  I hiked out early in the morning to this rocky beach and spent a couple of hours working with the trees and the rocks with perfect overcast skies.  I had a few hikers go by with a quizzical look on their face; they must have been wondering why this guy was spending so much time with plain old rocks with a gigantic camera.

Blue Skies and Sunshine

Blue Skies and Sunshine - Alpa STC, IQ180, 32mm, ~f/11, 1/2s, ISO 35.

This image appeals to me for many reasons.  First I love how the weathering blue paint on the wall reminds me of wispy clouds in a clear blue sky which contrast the warms sunlight coming in through the far window.  Next I really like the visual element of line and shape in this image with the triangles on the top and bottom and the layers of rectangles inset within each other.  Lastly. while this can’t be appreciated when viewed on a small screen over the internet, there is so much in terms of detail to get lost into with this image with everything from the cracked paint showing contrasting colors underneath to details in the sand.  This one would be great printed large!

Bad Directions

Bad Directions - 5D3, 400mm, f/3.5, 1/1250s, ISO 200.

Never ask a Penguin for directions…

Milky Way, Clouds & Shooting Star

Milky Way, Clouds & Shooting Star- A7r3, 14mm, f/2, 30s, ISO 6400.

A single frame with a shooting star and the milky way from Friday night.  I wish I had the energy to be out shooting tonight!

Bixby Bridge and Milky Way

Bixby Bridge and Milky Way - A7r3, 14mm, f/2, 30s, ISO 6400.

I stopped off at Bixby Bridge on my way back Friday night (technically Saturday morning since it was 1:45AM) and the fog had mostly cleared so I figured I would make a quick image.  There were still some clouds hugging the cliffs which lit up nicely in the first frame I captured.

King Pair

King Pair - 5D3, 400mm, f/4, 1/800s, ISO 200.
Its amazing that even after nearly 6 years I still find Penguin images from my South Georgia trip that I haven’t seen or worked on in my catalog.

Sails and Moon

Sails and Moon - Hasselblad X1D, 45mm, f/8, 1/180s, ISO 100

I had a really hard time getting this black & white conversion to look right in Lightroom, but fortunately with Silver Efex Pro from the Nik Collection it took only a few seconds to get exactly the tonality I was looking for!

Sydney First Light

Sydney First Light - Hasselblad X1D, 21mm, f/9, 256s, ISO 100.
It was a beautiful morning for some pre-sunrise photography of the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.
