Out of the Bushes

Out of the Bushes - 1DX, 200mm, f/5.6, 1/400s, ISO 800.

I didn’t even know I had taken this image until I went back in Lightroom to images from my Botswana trip in 2013.  I love going back and finding new images to work on.

Snow Covered Geothermal Field

Snow Covered Geothermal Field - Alpa TC, IQ3 100, 35mm, f/11, 1/4s, ISO 50.

I love the juxtaposition of snow and a the heat of an active geothermal field.

Layers of Cloud

Layers of Cloud - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 150mm, f/10, 1/1000s, ISO 100.

The incredible cloudscapes you see in Antarctica.

Cliff's Edge

Cliff’s Edge - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 40mm, f/14, 1/4s, ISO 50.

I have a fear of heights, which can be challenge for a landscape photographer and many grand scenes come at being perched at the edge of a cliff, much like this one.  The place I was standing upon was large and stable so I knew that it was a perfect safe and fine place to photograph, but the fear is always there, just have to grit through it.

Iceberg and Seals

Iceberg and Seals - Leica S 007, 38mm, f/8, 1/500s, ISO 200.

A herd of seals by and iceberg near Portal Point in Charlotte Bay.

Bird on Ice

Bird on Ice - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 115mm, f/14, 4s, ISO 50.

An otherwise “me too” image of ice at the Jokulsarlon, the thing that redeems this photo is the little bird perched on the ice.  Its something lost on small images on social media but is the kind of detail I like seeing in big prints.

Clarence Island and Tabular Iceberg

Clarence Island and Tabular Iceberg - Leica SL, 182mm, f/7.1, 1/2000s, ISO 250.

One is an un-movable island, the other a tabular iceberg very much on the move.

Small Waterfall in Hraunfossar

Small Waterfall in Hraunfossar

Hraunfossar (or Lava Falls) is a series of waterfalls formed from streams flowing over a lava field and while there are more dramatic waterfalls here, I really liked picking out the little ones for a more intimate landscape.

Morning After Storm

Morning After Storm - Alpa STC, IQ180, 32mm, ~f/11, ISO 35.

Its been years since I went photographing in Yosemite and I ran across this image I hadn’t previously worked on from over 5 years ago.  It was the spring of 2013 and was memorable because we were lucky enough to be there at just the right time to see a storm clearing in the valley, giving all kinds of dramatic clouds.

Enter with Caution

Enter with Caution - Alpa TC, IQ3 100, 23mm, f/11, 1/20s, ISO 50.
One more from that crazy cool ice cave earlier this year, this time from the entrance with a view into the cave.  I love those icicles hanging from the entrance of the ceiling, we moved quickly through that part.

Mother and Child

Mother and Child - 1DX, 200mm, f/5, 1/250s, ISO 4000.
Another one from Africa in a morning of processing images.

Juvenile Leopard

Juvenile Leopard - 1DX, 350mm, f/4, 1/250s, ISO 1600.

On our first game drive in the Okavango Delta we spotted this juvenile Leopard who had just been pushed out by his mom to fend for himself, which Leopards do after 12-18 months.

Tunnel of Ice

Tunnel of Ice - Alpa TC, IQ3 100, 23mm, f/11, ISO 50.

Another image of the spectacular ice caves of Iceland.

Ice Bubbles

Ice Bubbles - A7r3, 16mm, f/22, 1/40s, ISO 100.

An expected delight one afternoon in Iceland this winter was discovering this lake with all kinds of interesting frozen bubbles.

Pebbles in a Pool

Pebbles in a Pool - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 120mm, f/14, 1/3s, ISO 50.  18 frame stack.

I found these pebbles submerged in salt water from the receding tide and after playing around with a couple of compositions settled on something where the pebbles in the pool were only a part of the frame.  The stillness of that water deceives the eye hiding the water until you get up very close.

Falkland Thrush

Falkland Thrush - 5D3, 560mm, f/6.3, 1/400s, ISO 400.

One from back in my bird photography days.  The Falkland Islands, which is where this was made, is still on my list of places to return and explore more.

Shades of Green

Shades of Green - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 70mm, f/14, 1/25s, ISO 50.

I find myself more and more drawn to simple images that explore simple concepts rather than the grand landscape.  This is one such image, and I was drawn to it the instant I saw it as I loved the layering of the different tones of green.  Once again, the few hikers that walked by me had perplexed looks on why this guy with a gigantic camera was spending so much time photographing a few trees.
