Hoodoos in Storm

Hoodoos in Storm - A7r3, 224mm, f/8, 1/500s, ISO 100.

I’ve been a fan of printing images, both to evaluate my own and to experience the photos of others.  For years at Adobe I was fortunate enough to have complete access to an Epson 7900 (which is a phenomenal printer) and after I left Adobe, I bought an Epson 4900 for home, which also produced amazing prints.  Sadly, a couple of years ago, the 4900 died completely (a series of cryptic error codes that I couldn’t really resolve) and I suspect it did so because of infrequent use (it had sat unused for a couple of months) combined with lots of dust in the house from renovations.  Rather than subject another printer to a  similar fate I held off until the renovations were done (which never seemed to arrive).  Finally, this week I got a printer, this time a Canon Pro-100, which while not as amazing as its predecessors, should keep me happy for a while.  This is the first photo that I printed before posting and the print looks spot on.  Unfortunately the image is a little blurry, a consequence of careless handheld photography so really only suitable for social media.

Meandering to the Ocean

Meandering to the Ocean - Hasselblad X1D, 30mm, f/11, 19s, ISO 100.

I went out to my favorite spot on the coast for some quick early morning photography yesterday.  Unfortunately by the time I had gotten out to the beach, color from sunrise was gone but I liked the shapes and tones of this composition, so I ended up making an image anyway.

Arrowhead - A7r3, 38mm, f/11, 2s, ISO 100.

I was thinking about what to call this image and just as I was wrapping up working on it, Zara, my youngest, walked by and said ‘nice daddy, that looks like an arrowhead’.  I think she can see abstract shapes in images better than I can.

Washed Up

Washed Up - A7r3, 141mm, f/13, 2s, ISO 100.

A chunk of washed up glacial ice right with a sunset in the sky.  Its not the typical Ice Beach image, but I like it.

Lazy Afternoon

Lazy Afternoon - 1DX, 560mm, f/5.6, 1/640s, ISO 640.

I think I want to spend the afternoon just chillin’ like this Leopard.

Strolling Giraffe

Strolling Giraffe - 1D4, 70mm, f/7.1, 1/800s, ISO 200.

Its been too long since visiting Africa, starting to feel the itch to go but I probably won’t be able to swing it for a good while yet.  Until then, I just have to keep going back and looking at and working on images from past trips like this one from the Serengeti.

The Kamenice

The Kamenice - Alpa STC, IQ3 100, 32mm, f/11, 1s, ISO 50.

The Kamenice gorge, carved by the Kamenice river is a great place for a hike in northwestern Czech Republic with the bonus of dense vegetation which makes for wonderful photography.

Snow Capped Hills

Snow Capped Hills - A7r3, 125mm, f/9, 1/200s, ISO 100.

I like the gentle lines and subtle tones of snow capped hills.

Possession Bay Beach

Possession Bay Beach - Leica SL, 90mm, f/6.3, 1/1000s, ISO 400.

A group pf King Penguins just arrived on this beach at Possession Bay, South Georgia Island.  It started snowing lightly during that zodiac ride which was a nice experience but we were unable to make a landing due to fur seals.

Late Afternoon Rest

Late Afternoon Rest - 1DX, 560mm, f/5.6, 1/400s, ISO 4000.

Today is International Cheetah Day!  While their conservation status is Vulnerable, their population is decreasing and with only about 7000 cheetah left (as of 2017), extinction is a real danger.

Wall of Water

Wall of Water - A7r3, 370mm, f/14, 0.4s, ISO 100.

Another image from Iceland this time from Hraunfossar and while the temptation was high to pull back and go grander especially with the little bit of rainbow on the right, what I really liked was how the water sheet was falling on that slanted rock ledge, hence the tighter framing.

Glacial Remains

Glacial Remains - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 50mm, f/11, 2s, ISO 50.

Not all images of Iceland need to be dramatic landscapes of waterfalls or ice beaches.  This is part of the Svínafellsjökull glacial lagoon which is one of the tongues of the massive Vatnajökull ice sheet.  I found the muddy yellow colors of the lagoon to be funky.
