Three Shells

Three Shells - Phase One XF, IQ4 150, 120mm, f/11, 1/6s, ISO 50.

I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that while I’ve been visiting Point Lobos for years, its only today that I photographed at Weston Beach.  Wow, have I been missing out!  Weston Beach is probably the best place I’ve visited for intimate or abstract landscape photography.  You just keep tripping over interesting compositions, definitely a place to visit when its overcast and the light is soft.  It was a virtually cloudless morning on the coast so I didn’t have a lot of working time and had to use my body as a light shade for scenes like this one.

Gnarled Oak

Gnarled Oak - Alpa STC, Phase One IQ4 150, 23mm, f/8, 1/13s, ISO 50.
Another one from last night, this time with an ultra wide angle and in black & white.  I like this composition and it’s one I will definitely revisit with the hopes of a colorful sky.

Lit Oak

Lit Oak - Alpa STC, Phase One IQ4 150, 90mm, f/8, 1/40s, ISO 50.

After a nearly 5 month wait, I received my new Phase One IQ4 150 digital back yesterday and took it out for a spin this evening.  While I have little need for 150 megapixels, I was excited for much improved performance with technical camera lenses.  I wanted to photograph the California Live Oaks near the house, especially with an ultra wide angle and while I did, I think I liked this one I made with the 90mm better.  I walked across this scene just as the sun was about to set, kissing the limbs of the tree with its last light.  I didn’t really like the rock while I was making the image but looking at it now it doesn’t bother me as much, what do you think?

Ice Jellies

Ice Jellies - A7r3, 16mm, f/22, 1/50s, ISO 100.

I didn’t see it at first, but these trapped bubbles in the ice are kind of like abstract moon jellies.

Highlands Sunset

Highlands Sunset - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 80mm, f/14, 1/8s, ISO 50.
A colorful sunset in the highlands of Iceland.  I think what I like the best is that little cloud over the mountain in the distance, it echoes the framing clouds at the top nicely.

Antarctic Sunrise

Antarctic Sunrise - A7r3, 100mm, f/8, 1/100s, ISO 400.

The beautiful sunrise could have happened anywhere but that tabular iceberg the lower part gives it away.

Artists' Palette

Artists' Palette - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 150mm, f/14, 0.4s, ISO 100.

Artists’ Palette in Death Valley is a popular photographer and tourist destination but that didn’t stop me from making my own image there early last month.  I had an idea of the kind of final image I wanted when I captured this, it was going to be a colorful image but with good shadow detail printed on a matte photo paper where both the shadow detail and all the hues of the color palette could shine but without the “punch you in the face” color of a glossy paper.

I’ve been debating what matte paper to use, back in my Epson 7900 days I really liked their Hot Press Bright but wanted to try something different.  After some reading, I settled on the Hahnemühle PhotoRag, a 308 gsm matte paper with a nice texture thats been around forever.  With a calibrated display and Lightroom’s soft proofing ability, the print came out spot on.  I did end up leaving the web version (what you see here) with just a bit more shadow contrast as it seems appropriate for that medium.

Orange in Blue and Gold

Orange in Blue and Gold - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 120mm, f/14, 0.4s, ISO 50.

An intimate landscape from a beach on the California coast.  I mainly like the palette of gold, blue and orangey red.
