Lines of Ice and Water

Lines of Ice and Water - A7r3, 400mm, f/18, 0.6s, ISO 100.
An almost abstract image made from a detail of GoĆ°afoss in northeast Iceland.  I made this one on my second visit to Iceland which was last winter.  After getting tired of capturing the big dramatic landscapes, its those intimate detail shots that keep things interesting.

Dancing Trees

Dancing Trees - Alpa STC, IQ180, 1s, ISO 35.

Another one from Namibia from over 5 years ago, this time in black & white.  I made this image in pre-sunrise as well but because of the direction I was shooting, the sky was a lot brighter and I remember deciding even then to push the exposure to go high key.  I prefer this composition to the one from yesterday because this one is much more balanced (in the ratio of dune to sky in the background) and with the two trees in the middle, there’s a bit of pseudo symmetry.  The title ‘dancing trees’ comes from my older daughter who says the forms of the tree reminds her of dancers.  I am adding this image to my portfolio on my site: https://www.akimagery.com/namibia.

Dead Valley

Dead Valley - Alpa STC, IQ180, 1/4s, ISO 35.

One of my favorite images in my portfolio is of a similar composition but captured at sunrise when the sun had lit the dune in the background but left the valley floor in shadow.  As I was looking back at those images I saw this one which I had made before the sun had come up which accentuates the cracked mud of the floor.

Serene Antarctica

Serene Antarctica - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 110mm, f/11, 1/1000s, ISO 200.

You have soaring, snow covered mountains whipped by clouds and wind, but when I look at this scene in the Gerlache Strait, what I feel is a calm serenity.  What a beautiful place!

Gold and Blue

Gold and Blue - Phase One XF, IQ3 100, 105mm, f/9, 1/1000s, ISO 100.

This is what happens when you mix the warm, filtered morning sunlight with ice and glaciers in Antarctica.  Just another morning in Wilhelmina Bay.

Evening light and shadow

Evening light and shadow - RX1, 35mm, f/8, 1/40s, ISO 120.

One from the archives, from a road trip at the end of 2012.  We drove though Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona just as the sun was setting.

Painted Black Beach

Painted Black Beach - A7r3, 100mm, f/14, 2s, ISO 100.

The combination of long exposure and black sand in this image reminded me of a painting so when processing it, I chose a white balance that brought out the pastel colors.
